Low, warm light from one side. Flattering on almost any face, and the closest of these to a portrait rather than a themed photo.
Snow and Winter
Cold blue light, falling snow, coats and scarves. Best on a photo where there is space around you, since a tight crop leaves no room for the weather to be visible.
Cards and Greetings
Simple compositions with space for text. If you plan to add a message afterwards, choose one of these rather than a busy scene. To print it large, upscale first.
Making a Card That Prints Well
Print needs more pixels than a screen. Generate, then upscale, then send to print. Enlarging a small file at the printer is where cards lose their sharpness.
Leave space if text is coming later. A composition that fills every corner looks good on its own and leaves nowhere to write once you add a greeting.
For family photos, keep the group small and the faces a similar size in the frame. A row of six people at different distances is the hardest case for any of these styles.
